Cobra 140 gtl receiving short wave broadcast

Sounds like a bad filter. My Browning Golden Eagle MK III does it as well & has for over a year but I don't even care since I no longer use it & doubt I ever will since I have far better radios.

Well I’m guessing these filters are discontinued? Is there any way to determine which one is bad... looking at the parts list I see an ft1 and ft2

you probably have a bad tuning coil or other part in the 7.8mhz IF section.

if one of the tuning coils has a broken or corroded wire inside it, the coil can act like a little antenna.

you may have experienced something like this before by touching your fingers to certain sections of a radio's PC board and hearing AM transmissions.

start poking around the IF section and see if you can't isolate which component is causing the problem.

another way to find if you have a bad coil is to try aligning the IF section and see if you have a coil that won't align or acts weird.

I did discover one thing.I still get receive in pa mode. With an external speaker plugged into the pa jack, switch in pa mode. I key the mic, the tx/rx light goes from green to nothing .

Yes I’m stupid lol, I have since messed with it and compared it to my other 140 gtl that works perfectly.... I also figured out if you take both covers of a cobra 140 gtl, and set it on top of an of an icom ic 718 with it’s felt dust cover on it. You can Rx shortwave broadcast in the 7mhz range, if you turn it to am, and turn the rd gain all the way down and volume up. Pick up the radio or put the covers on it and it magically goes away lol.

Just picture this, minus the covers. You can listen to overcomer ministries on 7.780 to your hearts content.
