Should I attempt a hookup of a Digi-Scan RDS-6 to a Cobra 142? Is it worth the effort? It's already bought and paid for. The Digi-Scan shows up @ 4:40 of the clip.
I wouldn't put one on there. Installing Digiscans require a bit of cutting on the PCB to install, and while having a frequency display is nice, you can have a counter put on that's easier to wire in, plus it maintains more of the original look and functionality of the radio. The Cobra 142's have a channel spread of 26.175-28.085, so the coverage between them both is pretty close.
If you have some tech experience and some good soldering skills, you'd be fine installing it, but personally, I think it's better to retain a little more of the stock look and functionality of the radio VS. having a clunky Digiscan on it that has to be there all the time. Just my .02 worth!.
My mind was pretty well made up before the post. I just wanted to find out from people with experience any pro's and cons.
No PCB cutting is required with this unit. The earlier units required such cutting. This one replaces the function of the MB8719 PLL. Remove PLL and hook-up a couple of wires.
I intended to hook-up an outboard frequency counter to the 142 in one way or another. So whether Digi-Scan or frequency counter, there was going to be a box on top.
