I found an old Cobra 146GTL in a closet. I hooked it up but it does not power on. Can someone give me some hints on what might be the problem? I looked inside it and found no hints of smoke or anything burnt up. I just can't figure out what the problem is.

Thanks

you check the fuse inline with the power cord ? .....protect diode down around where the pos/neg wires go into the board ? ...they need not look burnt to be bad.

Umm, how 'bout the "CB/PA" switch?

Just asking.

And that radio is old enough the power switch could be bad, as well. I suggest a good, thourough look inside for any sign of a 'kaboom' moment some time in the past, like a burned foil trace on the circuit board, or burned parts attached to the inside of the power socket.

Nothing looks smoked in there. I checked the diode and the switch with my ohm meter and they work fine. Still don't know what the problem is. Anyone else have anymore hints?

I finally got around to looking at the radio real close. After doing a little testing with my Multimeter, I found that the solder on the power switch had cracked. After a little soldering, I got that baby going like a dream.

I guess the 146 came before the 148. The 146 features are just about like a 25 but includes Voice Lock, and Side Bands(LSB, AM, USB). That is all that I see that is different. Maybe someone else has some other opinions.

the 146 came after the 148 here, they came in 40 and 80ch versions and are a decent ssb radio but single conversion rx on am, it is hard to find one that sounds bad once it is aligned, this is a president ar144 i put highband on, it uses the same board as 146

look where my amc preset is set compared to youres lol, my am is set at 95% modulation :D

both of my 144's use nec d2824c pll chips, thats why i built the oscillator board for extra channels
