Cobra 19 amp

It all depends if it is base or mobile. You didn't specify. Power supply capacity makes the difference. The radio's output may need to be turned down slightly in order to match to an amp. But this also depends on the amp. Lots of variables here.

Any one car make/model alternator can put out different amperage. Most can support about 300 watts. Some cars can support larger amps. But changes to the electrical system might be necessary. Depends entirely on that particular cars' electrical system.

On a base setup, the power supply is also the limitation. With any one power supply the amperage of the supply will dictate how big of an amp it can run. A 20 amp supply will work up to 150 watts; while a 50 amp supply will run up to 450 watts.

These are just rough estimates, as each linear amp requires slightly different amounts of amperage to work with that particular amp design.

Nothing makes a radio work better than the best antenna you can get/install. I would do this before I consider running any amp. Come to think of it - I don't even use an amp. Just a high quality antenna installed properly. Talk to most of the world - with just 50 watts. That is how you know you did it right - lol!

i agree with rob but to answer you question we need much more info
is it base or mobile
what type/kind of antenna
what kinda coax
theres other things you can do FIRST before even thinking about an amp

once you have a good antenna and feed/mount setup a amp is a great option . a standard cobra 19 with a simple tune will drive a 2 pill or 4 pill texas star to the full clean power its pills can do . id just stick with a 2 pill since any vehicle can easily power it and its inexpensive . but mainly because it will be the rare occasion that 250 watts wonlt talk where 500 watts will talk . doubling power has very little effect on talking distance . it takes a lot more power to consistently make a real detectable difference .

BTW , you can use the biggest amp made with it , you just need a smaller amp to drive it with .
its all about how deep you wallet is and how bad you want to get out farther .
with some folks its also about how large their ego is , their need to be noticed :lol::lol:
