Cobra 19XS no recieve

Hello all

I recently got a cobra 19xs for two dollars at a flea market. I bought two of them so I could play around with tweaking and seeing what everything does in a radio.

I took one of the radios to a friend's house so he could play with one. After putting it on a meter, it deadkeyed 2 watts and swung to 6 watts. After a few hours, he had it deadkeying about 4 watts and swinging to 20 watts on channel 20, 15 watts on channel 1, and 25 watts on channel 40. Everything seemed to work fine, so he buttoned it up and I took it home to put it in my car.

Well once I hooked it up, I had no recieve. The meter on the front wasn't even moving either. I hooked up a PA speaker and it worked just fine. It's transmitting okay, near as I can tell (the meter swings when I talk). I read it might be the voltage regulator but I'm not really sure.

He turned quite a few of the slugs inside and spread apart some of the coils that were inside. It was a test radio anyways so i'm not mad. I had even anticipated having to work on it from the beginning. Now i'm wanting to see if I can fix the problem. Any help would be great.

Hi,

I have to state the obvious here, it looks like your mate while he was playing around detuned all of the adjustments for the RX side, as well as doing all the TX ones.... it is possible to completely kill the RX if it is very far out of adjustment.

If you want to learn more about how these thngs work and be able to tweak them up etc. buy a couple of books, such as the ones by Lou Franklin, which are very good in teaching about the inner workings.

To try and rectify the RX fault use a second CB connected to a dummy load or antenna (dummy load preferred) and use it to transmit on the same channel as your dead radio, then try adjusting the metal cans one by one until you can get a signal, the best thing to do is to try and return the adjustment to its original position if it does not seem to change anything, as it is probably not for the RX, even 1/16th of a turn can throw an adjustment out of whack so do your best to ensure they go back in the same place, I can do a full retune of a SSB radio in about 10 minutes, but that is using the proper test equipment for CB repair and alignment.

So I have a cobra 138xlr and the meter dose not work... It dose not key up and signal dose not work.... It is not stuck it the meter moves freely. now wires are resoldered on both ends...So now that do I look at. Could it be a diode or a transistor?
