Has anyone installed MOSFET's in this radio? I have found very limited info on this one. I have already did a few of the 25's and 29's but have not seen anything but on the new style 148.

Any tips is much appreciated.

CBTricks has the mod for the 148GTL with the ERF2030. The power output is about the same as what you can get with the stock radio tuned up good, though. I don't know what it would be with the IRF520.

The application notes on CBTricks says that it works on the newer chassis, but they're unsure about the old ones. I haven't looked at the schematics in a while, but I thought the transmit section on the old and new ones were pretty close. I bet it would work.

I am going to look at the two and see if there are any difference. (new and old). I may just go ahead and try it and see what happens. I have a 2000 in that keeps blowing finals from what the guy said. It also had some power supplt issues so maybe that was the problem.

thanks

not to sure if the 2000's power supply inside could handle the Mosfet up grade ? IM sure it would be just fine when using the radio on the DC side with a bigger power supply used.

The 2000s have a age issue as it is. Always thought it was best to use a amplifier for any extra needed power with those. Although I am curious about this new RX75 little mosfet add on .

I'll be getting one shortly and taking my chances on a older Grant XL with it. Hear tell they work and sound well on SSB. News at a 11. :)

Well then RT , sounds like you got that part taken care of. You might even think about one of those RX75s for the 2000 ? Now that would be something !! A 100 watt Cobra 2000 (y)

Hmmm.

LOL That would be something. I have a chance to get one for 150 bucks. No mic or speaker. Radio is basicly bone stock all but the channel mod. I rather do it to one I own than my friends. But then again, he might want to have it done .

Anyway I have never liked the power supply in the 2000. Seems with the age now of them after a good tune the lights dim. A friend of mine at Tarheel radio introduced me to the power supply mod a while back. So that is one of the first things I do to them.

100 watt Cobra eh? ....

just send me the 2000 before we do a rfx
i have better plans for it
hey i give you a galaxy 2517 for the 2000

stay away froum mosfet's. have had bad luck with them. want more power just add a amp.

What kind of problems did you have?
Remember, mosfet's will not take the abuse that the older companion parts did.
High swr is a killer. And not just with the antennas. But also with poorly built amplifiers where the input match is poorly designed or out of tune.

Mosfets are not something that we are going to be able to stay away from. One day in the future that is all we are going to have. With newer radio’s coming out on the market, the suppliers will stop making the current parts.

I think your right here RT . Even Galaxy and RCI are using them left and right nowadays . There much cheaper then transistors. I've been through a few Mosfet amps over the years and they got the jobs done.

IM a bit of old school myslelf , but that don't change the fact that it surely looks like Mosfets are here to stay.It also seems that the cost of NPN type power transistors have gone sky high in cost. Even 1446s have gone up !

You got that right SK.
Seems everytime I order transistors the price goes up.

I have a friend of mine that ordered 100 IFR520's. He gave .50 cents a piece for them. I asked him why he ordered so many, he said " after all the older style power transistors are gone, the price of MosFet's will climb". I think he may have a valid point.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

the 2N5301 that was added were and why what dose this do help out the power supply will it get me more out on the swing and the zener the one on the power supply is that what was changed also would it be safe to say that you should replace the main am regulator as well i think it is a c1419 as well and most say replace it with nte152 is there some thing better i can use to get some more power out of this radio?
