Was in the radio room after work rearranging the bench and was playing with my 2000 that I bought last year from ebay. I thought of a question to ask in here about a replacement cabinet from a parts radio. The radio appears to work good and has extra channels but I notice the cabinet doesn't have a ventilation grill in the top like all others I see. Thinking maybe it was a replacement for a broken original. Anybody know where a guy might get a cabinet from a parts only radio? Being a craftsman I thought of cutting a hole in the top and adding a ventilation grill but that is time consuming & pains taking work and I already have enough on my plate. I'm not worried about destroying it's value because I will Never sell it but it should have the ventilation if the original had it. Any ideas !!!

Might be tough to find a parts radio at a good price. You might have to find an old blown stereo receiver from the late 70's or 80's and use the vent or screen.

The cover is probably from a Cobra 1000GTL. It's the AM-only model from that year, and looks almost like the 2000. But it doesn't need the extra ventilation and has a solid wood top surface.

The 2000GTL generates more heat and definitely needs the ventilation.

Thanks Guys for the heads up, that's probably why the wood grain doesn't really match between the radio and the speaker. I figured it might be a tough job finding parts but I do see new made covers on ebay for radio and the speaker. ( Pricey & Not Original Looking ) I'll pull the cover tonight and see what I'm up against. Thanks again !

Update ! I couldn't wait so pulled the wood cab. this morning and found a sheet metal cover under it with just a few round hole in the back. Nothing to warrant the wood cab. having a ventilation screen in it. Does this indicate one of the earlier 2000 GTL models before they discovered they needed ventilation ? How about Cobra's serial # system does that tell you about the year of manufacture. I'm going to let it run all day and see how much heat is generated. Right now the radio room is cool because of morning.

Every 1000GTL radio I remember seeing had a solid-wood top cover like yours. The 1000 just doesn't get as hot, so they didn't bother to ventilate it. Pretty sure someone did a switcheroo on you, either to replace a damaged cover, or to pimp a 1000 model.

Yes I understand what your saying but what doesn't make sense to me is why they didn't put more ventilation holes in the metal cover under the wood cabinet. I might just use a computer cooling fan to extract the heat out of the radio. I ran it all day yesterday and it didn't seem to get hot, but I wasn't DXing either. Thanks for the Info !
