I have a Cobra 21 that just today puts out no audio on the internal speaker.

Yes I made sure the squelch was all the way down.

I tried the external speaker jack. it does work.

I opened the radio and found neither the blue or white wires were broken loose from their solder points.

Is there anything else I should/could check?

Well...if the blue and white wires are good it's probably the flux capacitor. Just my experiance. Or, try another cobra microphone.

If the internal speaker is hooked up and isn't working but the external speaker is working.......do we really need to go any further with the diagnosis?

Flux capacitors are highly inefficient....1.8 jigga watts to get them to work? They sound as inefficient as congress has been for the last 40 years.

I tried another mic, it made no difference.

Well, I would like for the internal speaker to work. i know most probably hate them but in my case i have my radio mounted on the headliner as so the internal speaker fires down, which reduces the need for an external speaker.

I suppose I could just solder a 1/8 male plug on the end of the internal speaker's wiring and just plug it in the rear of the radio.

Figured it out...the internal speaker coil has an open. It doesn't read anything on my ohm meter. That's with the internal speaker completely unsoldered from the radio.

Plus once I unsoldered the internal speaker leads, I then tried another speaker (from a car) on the blue and white internal speaker wires. It works. I got sound. So the wires are supplying power.

I even hooked the internal speaker straight up to the external speaker jack using two test wires and a 1/8 pin male connector...still nothing. And I knew for a fact the external speaker jack worked.

Never thought I'd ever encounter a speaker with an open coil.

Now for the big question...what's the best internal speaker on the market? :D

The one that will fit.

Better to use a decent quality 2-way external speaker if using it as a base.

Or is it going mobile?

I have never heard an internal speaker that sounded decent. You can find external speakers for 10-20 bucks and if you really have money to piss away get a Texas Ranger chrome case speaker for $60!!!

It's going in a mobile.

I actually thought the internal speaker on my 21 sounded ok...better than some of the other radios I've owned. Then again I also had the radio mounted overhead so the internal speaker fires downwards at you.

The TR chrome case would be an overkill for my old beater work truck. Are those little mini Pyramid speakers worth a darn?
