picked up an older (1990s vintage) cobra 25 and got it back in working order. I want to do the ERF2030 mod but I dont like the idea of a 2 watt carrier, I dont plan on running this with a class C amp and I like modulation not distortion. I want the highest deadkey I can get with enough headroom to do between 3x and 4x the carrier power, which would be about the 40+ watts they say the ERF mod will make.

if ya know how to .id take out the squelch knob and put a variable
carrier then if ya do decide on a amp later u can turn variable down.
or take out the ch. 9 and put a high/low dead key switch.2 watts
swing up too 50 or so should be ok long as limiter stays INTACT
use a good noise cancelling mike .may need to turn down mic gain
slightly but doubt it if above is followed.my 2 cents worth

I'm sure if the ERF was put in right, that the dead key could be set as high as 6 watts with 30 watts swing.

If using an amp; then 2 watts dead key might be needed . . .

A good heavy 25 watt variable resistor for the input of the amp would cure that issue Robb.
