My problem is my cobra 29 gtl has a half burnt resistor on the board marked R46 i think the color band is gold, black, red, yellow? I turned of the radio when i saw smoke, it still turns on but the resistor smoke more so it been turned off. need help Can someone tell me what to replace this resistor with. Thanks #15.

Before you replace the resistor, you need to figure out what caused it to release the smoke and cease working.

Once the smoke is let out of an electrical component, it will not work. I have tried to repressurize components with smoke, but have been unsuccessful in bringing them back to life.

Good luck---Rich

Absolutely...if you want to fix your radio, the best thing is to figure out "what caused the resistor to fail". Alot of guys will just replace the resistor with the same one or a higher watt resistor and consider it fixed. Thats not the best thing to do since you still don't know what caused the problem in the first place.
I think a schematic will help you out the most. Thats the first place to start since it will give you the resistor value and you will be able to see what the resistor does in that circuit alot easier.

R46 is in the power supply/regulation section of the 29. There are a pair of filter caps that could be shorted in that circuit, C20 and C26, which would cause the problem. C20 is the most likely culprit. It is listed as a 100uf cap in the 29GTL, and is right next to R46. In a radio that old, its an extremely likely cause of your problem. Does the radio itself still seem to work ok even with the smoking resistor? BTW, if R46 does smoke and fail completely, it won't hurt anything in the radio, it will just stop conducting and will need to be replaced. I'd use at least a 1/2-watt resistor there.

Thanks DTB radio i replaced R46 (47 Ohm) and it smoked again. The radio still works with that burnt resistor. But upon futher inspection the RF meter does not swing?? anyway i will try what u said and will let u all know what happens Thanks #15.
