I have a spare computer and was wondering if it is possible to make it an online server so my kids can use it as their server for the online games they play like Day of Defeat?

Is this possible?

now you can buy a domain name say like happyhammer.com
and have it redirect to your computer (the server part you set up to serve the outside world) godaddy has them for 8 bucks a year...

now if your going to have the server on a router...and in the house you can do the same thing :)

you really dont need the hame happyhammer.com
you can use the ip on the router...

now server program for windows ...you will need apache
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi ...is the server once up and running you wil see a page you made using the happyhammer.com,ip or local temp name...

now if the server needs a database you need mysql
I will look for a package for you...if you need mysql :)

I will help you just let me know how its going :)

When hosting a game server, the GAME itself usually has the server built into it, like us here we have a halo game server running at times as well as a nascar and other various games that the kids play. If their going to run just one game at a time on the machine to be the server, then the machine won't have to be too big.
Look into IsCool.net or some other Redirector service for a free name like HappyHamer.iscool.net or whatever, then point this to your home ip. Have a router at the house and open the correct ports that the game uses and direct it to the servers ip.
I can help you as well, pm me if you have questions or problems.

i run online multi player servers from the same pc im playing on.

having a seperate one is better.

most games you download a dedicated server program for the game you want to run a server for will have a good readme file wich will help you get started.
