One cannot expect distances to be consistent when transmitting. With my Wilson 1000, I have talked skip 5k miles away and talked up to 60 miles away locally. It just depends upon how many radio operators are in your area and skip conditions. So long as your antenna is set up properly and there are enough stations around, you should be able to talk at least 20 miles in SSB and AM modes. I do it all of the time; but there are a lot of stations in my area too...
