has anyone out there figured out how to get the pics or mp3 player to work in these darn things..maybe thats why the radio is discontinued...

I don't know if the size limitation or pic format is the problem you're up against, but this is posted over at CB Tricks:
Known Limitations
The USB slot on the front panel will only handle 1 GB - If you exceed this with a larger thumb drive the unit will shut down and you have to remove power at the rear panel to revive.
The SD slot will only handle 2 GB Maximum and the same is true above.
Also the pictures must be in jpeg format to display on the TFT screen.
