Considering purchasing a Yaesu FT-980... why or why NOT?

Well, if you've got the bucks and you want one, why not? Reminds me in looks of the FT-102. Nice to have CAT, and 12 memories, and FM, and WARC bands. The only thing I would want to know is does the one you are looking at have the extra filters? They are nice to have, and purchasing them after the fact really adds up to the final cost of the rig. By the time you load it up, you could have bought a ...... well you know that argument!
