Was out playing with my 500lumen flash light and its very foggy out. Why is it each particle is perfect diameter ? Circle shaped and when facing the light up the particles close to the lenses.of the flash light create a swirled motion like the particles are dancing ? Weird shit happens at 2am in socal.

I now assume you have one of these:

Lol @ maryjane card. I haven't smoked pot in almost 12 years. Im serious as all heck they looked like grains of sand but, perfect in circular diameter tho.

A perfect sphere is the smallest volume a given number of water (or any other liquid) molecules can occupy. With larger raindrops, gravity and air currents affect the shape, but in a mist/fog, the droplets are so small that the surface tension outweighs gravity, and the droplets just float in the air.

I thank my high school physics teacher, Mr. Tom Neal (SK) for drumming stuff like that into my head! 50+ years ago!

Exactly. Since atmospheric pressure is equal all around the droplets they are forced into a perfect sphere. External forces like gravity, wind, G-forces etc will distort the shape from a sphere. Typical high school physics stuff.

The heat from the flashlight could cause turbulence in the air near the lens. I've often seen vapour rising from the lens of powerful flashlights for 6 feet much like your breath would turn in to vapour on a cold day.

I do that....amazing how much crap is in the air we breath.
