CW: how fast should you be before using it on the air?

just wondering, or should I just keep a chart and hop on the air?

I was told it's not how fast you can key but how Accurate you can key:) So don;t worry about SPEED. Just take your time and make some QSO's eventually later on down the road you can be a speed keyer:wink:

Way back when I was a novice I and working my way to general I started at 5 wpm and went from there. In about two months of daily QSO's I was at 23 wpm. I noticed it was too easy at first to start sending faster than I could copy...this was before the days of computers and code translators so then I would have to ask the other station to slow down...Ooops.

Start calling CQ at a speed you are comfortable with and a good OP will answer at the same speed. Don't be afraid to as someone to QRS. If your using a straight key focus on accuracy and spacing and don;t worry about speed...that will come soon enough. Be good at the basic techniques first.
