Way back when I was a novice I and working my way to general I started at 5 wpm and went from there.  In about two months of daily QSO's I was at 23 wpm.  I noticed it was too easy at first to start sending faster than I could copy...this was before the days of computers and code translators so then I would have to ask the other station to slow down...Ooops.


Start calling CQ at a speed you are comfortable with and a good OP will answer at the same speed.  Don't be afraid to as someone to QRS.   If your using a straight key focus on accuracy and spacing and don;t worry about speed...that will come soon enough.  Be good at the basic techniques first.
