Had a restless night and was up at 3am this morning. Began the morning as usual. Bathroom stop, house coat, Olight Baton 3 left pocket, Sig 365 right pocket (10 + 1 with Winchester RA9TA 127grain +P+) spare mag left front pocket and Benchmade Infidel front right pants pocket. Walked to the kitchen started the coffee pot and proceeded to let my 3 yr old Chocolate Labador Bear outside on the tether, with my hands in each pocket on my EDC’s…Olight 3 Baton and Sig 365. Just as I’m walking towards the street to survey my surroundings I saw a shadow coming from the corner of our Ford Explore out of my peripheral vision…about the same time Bear starts growling/barking. Immediately I pulled both EDC’s from my pocket and in a low strong commanding voice said, “come out where I can see you.” Backing away from the vehicle to widen the distance between whatever it was and me I started to sweep the end of the vehicle. No I didn’t BLADE. Mean while Bear continues growling. The shadow is still there and hasn’t moved. As I clear the end of the vehicle with light on and gun sights clear…there he is at the driver side rear tire couched down…my neighbors German shorthair pointer Jake. After stomping my foot and telling him to scram off he goes into the night.
After breathing a sigh of relief I realized during this entire encounter that there was no elevated pulse or shaking hands from an adrenaline rush. Amazing how years of training takes over in those moments.
Walked back into the house, gave my dog an “Atta boy”, dog treat and pat on the head. By this time the coffee was done and I was chuckling.
