ebay deal of the day

To those who have owned or used a Pro-40: Are they really worth the price they're commanding?

The differential SWR bridge is nice, but the one feature I've never seen on any other manufacturer's set is the " whistlestop" - audio notch filter. It's better to implement a notch at IF instead of AF, but that would have driven costs even higher than they were. This being said, an external audio DSP on any of my 11M rigs makes short work of multiple heterodynes. So what else is a kilobuck+ netting us, other than the "cool factor" - which those radios are...?

The Pro 40 is a very nice rig, They were built By Don Stoner ( W6TNS ) and if you look you will see that they are SSB radios only.
If you wanted to use AM, you had to buy the "add on module" to go with the radio.
There was a complete station set with Speaker, Scope, AM Module, Wattmeter and more, much like the CPI rigs had.
Don and Pierre Goral also had a company together that built Marine Radios called Stoner-Goral-Communications.
You might Know this company, it is know as SGC that builds a lot of great radio equipment still today.

He passed Away on May 4, 1999.
If you use the search feature here on the Forum, there Is more info on him and his Radios,
Also CB Gazette.com has a whole section on Don
Click the link to read more. I hope Woody won`t mind ( and thanks to him for some great Info on both Don and Stoner radio) if I post the Link, and two of his Pictures here.
You can also Do a Search on the Web for Donald L Stoner for more Info.

"I won’t digress further into the radio’s specifications, as we have several reviews here on the website, however I have to make one further point – There weren’t guys out there that had the guts to put THEIR name on the front of the radio, but those that did such as Browning and Stoner, were legends in their own time."
