An x fellow co-worker broke my P10k off the 980 CAT I live in daily and the replacement is two weeks out. CAT supplies these 5' Everhardt antennas with the loaders during purchase. Being a bottom load antenna I can't imagine they would be much good but figured I would ask here. Would I be better off with a 5' firestick during the waiting period or is the Everhardt comparable.

Thanks
Tim

Hi
The 5' firestick will work much better than a base load, but as you can shift quickly from forwards to revise on a cat you need a very good mount as the firestick is a heaver antenna than most

Dave

No reason why it should not work just until you get a replacement, like Mac said don't run a bunch of power into it. I used similar in the past, they work OK, and you can beat the crap out of them, good trail antenna for just a radio set up.

it will work .as others already stated low power. i never used one
but judging from its a bottom load i figure it wont be as good as
the 10k so dont be surprised.

i had that same antenna but it was black ran 700w through it and melted the plastic rubber right off the bottom coils. that antenna sucks, sucks on ssb. go with the 5' fiberglass.

I am sure if you were running power thru it it would not hold up, but IDI was talking about using it on a CAT loader, that is rough service.
with less than 100 watts it should be fine and you can beat the crap out of it.

There is a couple of friends of mine that use the radio shack version of the same antenna, (half breed or all-terrain) on 4x4`s and they are almost indestructible.
The off road club did not want them using full length whips because one of the spotters on the trail one day got slapped hard by a 102 that was tied down, broke free from the tie down and whipped back, it broke skin and left a really nasty whelp across his forehead.
Lucky it did not take out an eye.
After that it was run a shorter whip while involved in club events, or remove it.
for less than 25 bucks, they work OK and are half the length of a full size whip.
They have there place....not as a high power antenna though.

And I was looking at it logically "If the antennas already there for use THEN USE IT" why spend money when you dont have to when your just days away from a new antenna anyways.

The Everhardt worked as most of you said it would..... O.K. I used it for only three days but am confident in saying that antenna is indestructable and is well suited for what it is designed to do.. I ended up putting on a 5' Firestick II for the remainder of the 10k's absence. I can not say I noticed any better recieve over the Everhardt but everyone on the recieving end claimed I was getting out better and my signal seemed clearer. I have the new K-1-12 back on the loader and my world is once again in harmony.:D
