Creating a high impedance input may not solve the transformer issue unless the only issue is impedance matching. If the inputs are balamced then a transformer is still required to convert from balanced to unbalanced in which case an opamp on the input is ideal and can be uswed both as a transformerless input and an impedance matcher. if all you require is a simple impedance transformation then what you are thinking about will work.
