Hello, I have a bunch of radios i need to work on and I’m still learning. I’m still diagnosing with a lack of tools.

My current radio that just decided to stop is a Philippine uniden Grant xl.

The situation: I was running the radio last night and I was receiving well. I had some locals out there talking so I thought I’d chime in.

The mic would transmit into the radio but I started hearing myself through the external speaker “with the mic gain up”.

So to check what was going on I turned on my hand held to see if the radio was putting anything out. You could hear it key up but no audio.

The radio had its usual power going to it. It’s peaked and tuned about 15 watts “no amp”

What should I be checking?

Make sure you're not on PA.

First thing to try is a substitute mike. Mikes break far more frequently than radios.

Or just unplug the mike. If you can hear any receiver audio that way, the problem is in the radio. And if the radio is dead silent with no mike plugged in, this points to the mike as being the source of your aggravation.

The Grant XL from the mid-1990s was the peak specimen of that variety of radio. All the later revisions Uniden made were not for the better. Don't let anyone talk you out of that radio.

Microphone
A mic would cause a little talkback when there isn’t supposed to be any? I mean I guess it is a 5 pin so I’m not entirely sure how the wiring works.

No worries there. It took me a long time to find one in my budget. We all know buying a used radio is always a gamble.

Thankfully this one was never hacked into and a friend of mine checked the clarifier. Thankfully the clarifier is still locked.

I’m going to be awhile before I can get a spare mic for it. I’m not seeing any loose wires on my current mic yet.

Theres gotta be a first for everything though
