Have you got the guts to work on this antenna atop the Empire State building? What a great picture and NO, I climb but I could not do that.

I've climbed a few much smaller ones, jumped out of an airplane or two, and have little fear of heights but I wouldn't do that....no chance.

I'd do it. I used to climb trees doing logging and other work when I was younger to pay for college. I climbed a few 100' palm trees that will make your nuts suck up to your throat. Those palm trees that are that tall are only about a foot in diameter at the top and in a good wind they sway A LOT. At least a building like that only has a little sway, LOL.

Why are they wearing helmets? Its not going to help if they fall.

It's not for fall protection. In almost any high level work like that or on a tower there exists the risk of something swinging around to hit you or if you should slip and smash your head into the tower or whatever you are working on. At least with a helmet it will leave you with just a headache instead of being unconscious and bleeding while hanging by your safety harness while a rescue crew tries to get you down.

It was kinda funny the way he wrote it. at least to me.. Also They guys on the empire state building don't feel the need for helmets it seems. Or was that photo before OSHA.. ?

Not sure the date it was taken but I would be more worried about any RF more so than bumping my head. I really like the way it looks like he is peaking into the antenna bay. Man it must be a bitch when those places have to do antenna maintenance and shut down all those transmitters so the workers are not exposed to the high level RF. One such stick in Halifax belongs to the CBC and just about everyone leases space on it. It is just a little 660 footer but it has a couple TV stations and several full powered FM stations on it and they ALL have to reduce power when men are on the tower or on the adjacent tower and they all have to shut down when actual antenna maintenance is done, switch over to a backup antenna and then resume broadcasting but with low power.

I Have to Agree Capt. The Rf would be the hazard. I cannot imagine doing the work like that unless everything was right on.. The view from the shot was amazing. I imagine it would be 10 fold from the pole..

Most every antenna at Empire has a backup which can be used while workers do their thing. Almost all antenna work is done overnight now.

Agreed All they need is for the main transmission cable to go bad and everything would be off the air for an extended length of time. That is what the CBC does with their Geizer's Hill site in Halifax, also know as RF Alley. They have a backup antenna but the power rating is lower than the main antenna. Work is done in the day if they can and at night if there is to be a major reduction in power or a total shut down.
