He turns on the power and display comes on but suddenly turns off again at times or may even flicker. At times display goes out but he can still hear receive from speaker. Sometimes it will make a clicking noise like its trying to turn on but it wont power up and its struggling to power up. Anyone have any ideas on what this is or where to start looking also is this a common problem with some of these.

I haven't heard of that happening before with a '706. I certainly don't hear everything though, so I can't say it's not happened before.
I think the first thing I'd check is if it's receiving enough 'juice' from the power supply, I'm assuming he's using one. Sounds odd, doesn't it?

My mIIg was doing a very similar thing, power up and then rite back off. Clicking then no power, no display problems though. I sent it to burghtart for repair, they said they found a broken trace in the power circuit on the board. Charged me 170 bucks, but havent had a problem since.
