So I've noticed it looks like both of these radios pretty much cover the same frequencies. What I have heard so far is the FT-857 has a menu to get to everything and doesn't have a built in antenna tuner, as opposed to the TS-2000. I have noticed the 857 is half the price of the TS-2000.

For a base and on somewhat of a budget I'm on the fence as to which to get.

Thoughts?

Well, about the only thing these two radios have in common is band coverage. The 857D was designed for portable/mobile use TS-2000 for base operation.

If it's your fisrt radio and your on a budget buy the Yaesu. I've owned and operated both and sold both of them. I didn't really like either radio(for various reasons) to tell you the truth. I preferred the Icom 706MKIIG for mobile and the Icom 756 Pro II as a base.

I had both, I would go back to TS-2000 as a base in a heart beat.

Re-read the specs on that 2000

it is actually two radios in one.

You can rx on two different bands at the same time and switch from main to sub to choose which one to talk on.

It don't seem a big deal until you actually have the option and use it a couple of times.

I would talk to the locals on 2 meter repeaters or simplex while listening to HF on the main side of the radio and if I hear something, just move to the main and make a call and not miss out on the locals either.

tons more options that I have not even touched on yet, the 2000 will be your better choice for a base.

leave the 857 for its intended mobile use
