yes i know its not going to perform like a cobra 2000 in AM mode

i get reports of it sounding muffled
what steps would i need to help this
i have the micgain set at 20

You have to take into consideration that these radios all sound muffled and the stock mics dont help but..... Most of the newer HF rigs have Microphone EQ in the menus. First off its important to watch your carrier power or dead key. Most HF rigs are factory set at 25 watt carrier if their not then its up to the operator to make sure its set at no more than 25 watts.

I would set mine at between 10 and 20 watts on my older rigs and then as the instructions say turn mic gain all the way down and set power or dead key carrier. once its set to 25 watts or less statrt talking into the mic while slowly turning or opening mic gain and as soon as you see the meter wiggle then that pretty much where you want to be.

microphones also make a difference in your sound all though Ive found that with my newer rigs like my Yaesu FT-857, FT-897 anf my FT-450 that the internal menu setting for the microphone EQ or High Cut and Low Cut settings help in adjusting this. The biggest factor is again your Carrier or deadkey setting.

As you yorself had said its never going to belt out like a Cobra 2000GTL or or 10 meter audio monster radio butit is a compromise and with trial and error or experimenting you can get them sounding pretty good but it will take some playing around and the best way to do this is through a dummyload and another radio to monitor your signal and sound I use headphones and it works fantastic.

This method also works great for setting a radio on frequency for SSB aslong as you are certain the radio you are using for monitoring is a newr rig and or on frequency. Its a cheap and dirty trick but it works and all it takes is matching voice tones from your mouth to the radio your listening to.
