When keyed the last digit of the freq. Counter reads 6 instead of 5. Researched a little but only found 1 answer which is to adjust v7 in the radio. Can anyone tell me will this work or should I have it aligned?

The first thing I would do is make sure the radio has 15 minutes to warm up. Then make sure the clarifier is at 12:00, double check to see if the clarifier has been un-locked. Watch the last number and turn the clarifier all the way in either direction, if the number changes then it's un-locked. By keeping it at 12:00 er so it should be on frequency at that point.

Next, are you talking AM or SSB? If your on AM no one will even notice such a small change. If you talk SSB that is where you will find out if the radio needs aligned or not. If the clarifier is un-locked you can correct such a small difference by a slight turn of the clarifier.

If your clarifier is NOT un-locked then you will have to have a local you trust with a good ear tell you if the transmit frequency is off or not. Good sidebanders will let you know, trust me. The 959 radio is known to drift alittle or alot depending on the temperature of the radio. That last number can and will change under normal operation.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response. I don't talk a whole lot on ssb, mostly am. It does it on both tho. I just get annoyed at the frequency counter changing when I key. Was just curious on if the vr7 changed your counter. I don't really want to spend the $ if its an easy fix.

If so; then the radio is transmitting on a different freq than is being received.

Remedy: Have the clarifier unlocked and the radio aligned. Even if you don't use sideband that much, having that much change on AM mode will affect your transmitted signal. A change of 200-300hz or more on AM starts to sound 'fuzzy' to another station.

But the same amount of change on SSB - is devastating to communicating with another station.

Time to take it to a reliable shop! - IMO

So it would be better to have the radio alligned, The vr7 pot wouldnt change anything???? Robb you replied in a previous post labeled : REally bad luck with allignments, or...?
There is a TX offset adjustment on the board at VR7. The radio may be on freq during receive; but if that VR7 isn't adjusted properly it will transmit off freq. VR7 should get you where you need to go.

So with this help me or not????

People have been giving me good reports on am other wise. but was curious as to if this will move the frequency on transmit

Nope; the radio is obviously transmitting on a different freq than it is receiving on. Unless you have the right equipment and know how to use it, what you propose is a crapshoot. VR7 is best adjusted with a real accurate external freq counter for best results. You might get it close with the built-in counter; but that is far from guaranteeing it being correct and accurate. You could easily be off by a hundred Hz or more. On SSB, that is a huge difference and will adversely affect its tune/performance.

ok thanks guys......I actually edited my Previous post, quoting what Robb said to someone in a previous post labeled Really bad luck with allignments or...?
But I think you answered my question. Thanks to all that answered.

BINGO

I really dont think that makes a difference on AM, majority of Cobras are not exactly on freq anywhoo. If your OCD is bothering you with one digit buy a lil freq counter for $30-$60 or pay a tech the same to do something no one will notice. Try a 1 day radio check with it to really see if it matters?

You are right; about AM making little difference. But if you looked at his original post, the question was about SSB too.

Still needs to be aligned if you are going to use it for SSB at all . . .
