I have a galaxy 959 it works great, i drive a palomar skipper with it, but it only shows 35 watts out with the galaxy, onplugging the skipper into some other radios which only run 3 or 4 watts the skipper puts out 100 watts<close>, but on the galaxy no<it has power lowered to 6 watts>, is this because the galaxy is driving to much power into the skipp amp?, if so I presume will have to dig into it and lower the drive down..any suggestions

Howdy Doc ,Welcome to the forum. What kind of Skipper Palomar is this your speaking of ? Tuber? transistor? mobile or base ? IM not sure about the tube models but about 2 watt drive should be more then enough for a transistor amp ,base or mobile. C2 is right about the 959 having variable power to turn it down . Was also wondering what kind of meter your using to figure out your numbers ?
VR-14 AM High Power
VR-18 AM Low Power

power

Yep I have a transistor amp skipper.
I showed 30 watts on the antenna tuner meter, so out of curosity I hooked up my mfj swr/power meter and direct on the radio it showed kicking 60 watts<big difference>, so I left the antenna tuner out checked the swr flat 1 to 1<no need to use tuner>, hooked it back up and presume it kicks around 60 watts, that is when I have the switch on the skipper in the second position, I tried the next higher level and the pwr supply died<ha>, must of been to much power for it. Anyhow it gets close to 60 and when I turn it to sideband, the mic gain about 3 oclock anymore it kicks the amp to quit also<presume to much power for the supply>, although its a switching pwr supply 18 amp.

So I think I have most of it solved, skip is so loud in here havent done much its jammed on every channel, but did manage a quick hello to a guy 30 miles from here on am, said loud/clear...
Thanks guys

It is better to turn down the 959 via the RF Power knob rather than use the hi/med/lo switch on the amp. Just leave the amp on hi and control the output on the radio.

Is the power supply running the radio as well? You need more than 18 amps anyway...maybe 25 will get you there just for the amp.

What is the Palomar/skipper rated at Doc ? 250 350 ect. ect. ?? look at it this way , you need roughly 10 amps per 100 watts pep , so lets say your using a 250 , that would be a 30 amp power supply to be on the safe side ,especially if your running your radio off the same power supply ??? when it comes to power supplies , the more amps the merrier when it comes to power (-:it's better to have more amps then not enough of them, not only the power supply can be damaged but the amp can be damaged as well , I would surely guess that no more then 3 watts into your amp as well , 2 watts being a lot more on the safe side. Sounds like you got some work and money to spend over there Doc ? Good luck to you.
