Galaxy 979 issue?

I have a Galaxy 979, and the thing doesn't really swing. Turned all the way up, the meter on the radio says dk 8 swinging 12, 13 on a really good whistle. Turned down to 1 or 2 dk, it swings up 1. Is this normal? I have a dx350 coming, and after doing some searching, it seems it should be swinging more. I just don't want to fry anything when I hook everything up. Is the radio shack swr meter good enough for confirming output of radio and/or amp? Thanks

If it is keying 8 watts when the RF Output knob is fully clockwise; that is incorrect. Should be 4 watts for a single-final radio with the RF Output up high; counter-clockwise (all the way down) it should be 1 watt. But it does mean that the final transistor is OK too. The PEP watts are fouled because the high and low output adjustment are off.

Sounds like that radio needs an alignment; someone was messing with it inside and they didn't know what they were doing . . .

I would be getting an external SWR / power meter. The internal meters are hit and miss.

Thanks for the confirmation. I bought it from cbworld a few months ago, and the case has not been opened since I got it. Now the question is, who do I send it to?

That my friend is a million dollar question. Some places may take forever to do. I would suggest trying DTB radio.

Is the radio shack meter acceptable for use as a power meter?
From my experience with them. They are good for SWR and ok for power. They are better than others and can last for years if you look after them.
Remember you will need about 4 watts for the swr meter to work properly.

I know some will tell you to leave the radio as is (which is mud ducky) but there are some mods on the net to get more swing watts out of it...

Is there any other mods I should have done? I am just planning t add a dx350, and like to play with both am and ssb. Maybe open up the clarifier? I am open to ideas. Thanks

I turned the modulation up on my 949 to get a little swing out of it, about 1/8th turn from wide open. Also did the clarifier mod. I run a TS 350 with my radio(s) and it seems to do well. This site, cbtricks and cbradiomagazine.com are your friends if you want to learn a little something.

I guess I will do a little more research on mods before I send it off. I just received notice that a 99v and dx350 are waiting for me at the post office. Thanks for all the help.

The xyl has my old 979 in her pick up. Straight and simple alignment and tune with a power echo mic and it rocks. Turn off the echo when ssb and its all good. The mod was turned up some but not all the way from when it was tuned. No clipping, cuts or rmoving parts is the best way to go with them.
