I guess I missed the part about steady output when keyed on SSB. I thought it was just a spike when first keyed up then nothing. I have seen many rigs do that and most often it was due to a dirty mic PTT connection or simply a little snap or creak in the mike case making a sound when squeezed to key it up. If it does have steady output on SSB mode there is definitely an issue with either oscillations or carrier balance. Either way it needs work.
