Does the DX-949 have the same board as the DX-959 to me I like the 949 better and would conect the external counter with a 6 th digit, the features all look the same.:pop:

The extra digit on the external counter is why I went with the 949. IIRC all Galaxy DX radios have a plug for there counter. Why have one on the radio and an external counter? Also, I think the one on the radio can be modded so that it drops the first digit and shifts the numbers over showing x.xxxx.

With a Galaxy radio your better off not seeing that last number..........constantly changing, lol.
Naw; they don't change that much . . . Sounds like you had a lot of bad experiences with it . . . So did I . . . At first . . .

They can hold freq well enough after they have been on long enough in a comfortable environment. I'm certainly no great tech; but can get them aligned with no real problem. I have seen more than a few Galaxy radios and have aligned them. They really do respond well to a proper alignment and TLC ('tech looking carefully') for proper solder joints and other known problem areas.

After aligning the receiver with a SINAD meter, the receive is more than acceptable. Sometimes the AGC mod needs to be performed if the receive on SSB sounds a bit trashy; but the mod cleans that up well enough.

Either the 949 or 959 is fine. Same basic chassis - IIRC. I prefer the 959 because the freq counter only really becomes useful after the P5/P6/xtra freq mod is done to it.

My 959 stays fairly stable on frequency by keeping it indoors plus I have a Viagra blue dot board in it. Even with that it skips a channel here and there. A 10 kHz switch would come on useful. Being used in a base station setup, a good base antenna is necessary for getting out local.

I was in part just making a general Galaxy joke. The 979 is not a bad radio at all. Over the years I owned an 88,99, 959, and a friend had a 98 VHP. In our winter weather mobile applications they all drifted quite bad. Move one inside and keep the temp steady it gets alittle better.
