Good Evening Gentlemen

I talked to a shop owner today and he recommended the Galaxy DX929 over the Cobra 29LX and the Bearcat 880. Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Will you ever want extra channels? I don't think the 880 can be converted yet. I would probably choose the Galaxy. Many others would choose the Cobra.

Thanks for the reply. I don't need SSB, is that what you meant by extra channels? One of the reasons I wanted the 29LX or the 880 is they are a newer design and they have weather channels. He said the Cobras have poor WX cards. So I was just thinking about getting a handheld Midland WX radio.

No SSB is is a different mode of talking on the same frequency, SSB consists of USB & LSB. Extra channels are frequency's both above & below channel 1 & 40.

As an example a Magnum 257 has 12 bands of 40 channels, and you can talk AM,FM,LSB, & USB on all of them. Stock a Cobra 29 has 40 AM channels.

I have not experienced such a radio. I have always had 40 channel CB's. I am going to look up the 257. Are all those different channels busy?

A SSB rig will open up a whole new world for you. The 257 is/was/could be a good radio again. That particular radio has been plagued with various problems recently.

There are many other better options out there. Others will definitely chime in. SSB rules and is a very nice option to have.

I love internet forums:) So much real user info out there. Thanks guys. I just read an article on the 257 and it is a 10 meter. My shop carries Magnums S6 80, S9 80 and S9 80 Nitro. A bit expensive but very cool looking and sounds like a better system. More opinions please:)

Edit: I was just looking at the the Strykers and Connex. I hear the Connex is a well recognized brand?

10-4 there Angus. It really depends on what you want to spend. Going with a legal cb set that has SSB is an option. SSB traffic on 36-40 can get very busy and be fun. You can then add extra channels to that cb set or go with an Export. Then you have access to all the freeband channels which gives you all kinds of options.

Is an Export the same as a 10 Meter? I am not looking at the Uniden 980 but was thinking about a 10 Meter.

I've got a 980 into a 100w and it does good. Barefoot...you'd be lucky to get it peaked over 10-12w. On SSB, it holds on frequency very solid.

I feel like such a dork:oops: I meant I am NOW looking at the 980. I met another guy on a different forum that says he can get it 18-20w. But I hear not many techs can do that. But I am also thinking about a box. BTW thanks for your input.

For those extra watts is at what cost?? No one is going to hear it. Go with the 980 and a little help (good amp) and you would be good to go.
