ssb is not the same as lower and upper channels, lower and upper channels are 40ch above and below fcc 40,usb and lsb are modes of operation like am and fm,ssb is am with the carrier and other sideband suppressed so only one sideband is transmitted, the upper and lower sidebands are mirror images of each other carrying the audio information above and below the carrier frequency.on reception the carrier is reinserted so the audio can be extracted from the signal.

for you to be able to talk to your mate on your high or low band you would have to add 40 ch above and/or 40 ch below fcc 40 to his radio, you would only be able to talk to him on am or fm as your rig doesn't have ssb.i'm not sure how easy or possible it is to modify a galaxy 949 for extra channels,i'm pretty sure it will be possible but with all due respect if you don't know the difference between usb/lsb and high band and low band chances are highly probable you won't know how to mod the radio.might be better finding a reliable shop/tech to do it for you.

What frequency are you looking for? The viagra board is basically going to get you the same frequencies as the wire snip and switches mod.

i have seen the snip and switch on some before. they are not to kind to the pll. i have seen them give problems. i personally wouldnt want to do it. im not saying it wont work. just saying it may cause trouble. at this point im not sure the viagra board would do better but they seem to last and not cause damage. on the other hand i have seen the snip and switch last too. guess it depends on the radio. i dont know. again not stepping on toes here. just stating my experiences with radios coming in that wont lock on frequency due to jumping the chip for channels. these rci8917 chips are not as tough as the old 8719s. anyway do what you want. i would recommend getting a radio with the channels in it already from the manufacturer.
again switch kit and molecule know what they are talking about. im just letting you know my experiences. which may not be everyones experience. others may have great luck.

As stated, the Superstar 121 is an AM/FM Export radio that has 120 channels. The Galaxy 949 is a 40 channel legal cb set that can talk on AM and SSB ( single side band ). Alot of people incorrectly sell a 40 channel SSB radio as being a 120 channel radio when in fact it is not. Having 40 channels up or down is not the same as USB and LSB.
