Galaxy Saturn (original) frequencies are out of wack....

Well, here is the update. I spoke to the owner and explained the current issue and the need for further work. The owner asked if he could just quickly flip the power switch and it would work on frequency? I explained that I did just that and let it stay powered up for 1 week and it did not revert back to being off frequency. Of course, if you turn it off and then slowly back on it is off frequency again. He would need to flip the power switch quickly to get it back. He said that it was good enough for him so he came and picked it up. I wish I could have returned it back to original functioning but it does receive and talk on frequency so I guess that's something.....

Thanks for all of the input here.

I'm curious if the ex- USSR equivalent adder chips are worth their weight in sand. I found this listing on eBay from Ukraine, but couldn't find any info or datasheet on that adder ic (id be surprised if I did, honestly). At 50 cents apiece, sans shipping, it's in my budget. I'm wondering if they could work for a 4008 replacement and if anyone has any experience subbing old Soviet ic's. I see someone has recently purchased these, so someone else may have the same idea.

I've heard that while the USSR was a scientific advancement collective, they put price over quality, and thus their ic's were failure prone. Any remarks?

I wouldn't without a data sheet to at least see if the pinouts are the same. Equivalent may not mean drop in replacement.

Worked with a guy decades ago who had an engineering job in a soviet semiconductor factory. The factory had bought an environmental test chamber. Was meant to run temperatures up and down while measuring device behavior. It got used to make french fries for lunch. Seems testing wasn't a priority there, not compared to lunch.

The standing joke among workers in soviet industry was "We pretend to work, they pretend to pay us".

Those parts might very well work, if they were meant for military use.

A 30-buck chip tester from fleabay would reveal parts that just won't work at all.

Thanks for the feedback guys, and the story, I bought some to play with anyhow, and I was able to find cross references from 2 locations, both in Russian?, which seem to say they were clones of the cd4008. I will update when they arrive, if they work as a drop in they could be a good cheap source.

Update: they have arrived!
I looked them over and the markings match the picture. I replaced both adders in a connex 3300 test radio, and they can add binary bits the same as the 4008s that were in it. So far, so good. Interested in seeing how long they can cut the mustard, but my gut says they will last.
Now, I didn't test all of them, but the few I plucked were good.
