Gama Fed Ground Plane ?

When I turn my box on I tell people that I put tin foil on the back side of the vertical to redirect my signal

I would presume he is doing the same thing

When I ran my Sigma 4 that is Gamma matched it did not make a bit of difference N S E or W

i can't imagine a little gamma match radiating more signal in one direction than the rest of the antenna .

I don't think a gamma match is going to contribute much 'directionality' to any antenna. There may be some slight variations in the radiation pattern, but nothing significant.
No radiation pattern is ever going to be absolutely, completely symmetrical. If your guy finds some 'bump'/'notch' in his pattern that's useful then good for him. I think it would be an exception, not the rule.
