Yes BM, symmetry is important, but the gamma is very small compared to the wavelength, and additionally there is likely some current cancellation in the area of the gamma. So this probably minimizes any directional response due to the asymmetry caused by the presence of the gamma.
I tend to agree with Beetle on this one. And again, this is similar to what often happens with CB'rs concerning their ideas on antennas and theory. They try to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
IMO it is the amount of difference that really matters.
BM, I know you don't believe my models, but here is one of a J-Pole showing some pattern skewing due to a 108" element that is parallel and close beside the radiator and the skewing amounts to a difference of less than .45 dbi from side to side. In this example, using a gamma, we might be referring to a gamma element that is likely less than 50" inches long at the most. If this example is similar to what might happen with a gamma instead of a 108" element, do you think such a difference will be detectable on either end of a contact?
