Antenna: Maco 7 element horizontal.
Gamma Match: 2000 KW
Max power into antenna: 1200 watts
Band: 11 meters

Question: If going to a 10,000 watt gamma, will this improve the performance of this antenna in anyway? Will it decrease the performance in anyway?

Your thoughts please.
Thanks

Edit: will this increase band width??

Hello DXman: As the Gamma Matches are made bigger, to handle more power, that is the distance between the inner and outer tubing is increased with a thicker insulator. This will mean that the Gamma Match may have to be shorter to achieve the capacitance needed, but now the connection distance on the driven element may be different.

I am sure a call to Maco guys might help. The higher power Gamma will not increase the bandwidth from my experiences.

I have modified many beam antennas removing the Gamma Match and installing a split / insulated driven element, and Hairpin Match and Balun. If you want a better beam antenna, yeah its more money and tuning but worth it.

Gamma matching for impedance matching and nothing else. The Q of the antenna is what will determine your bandwidth. If you want better performance get it higher in the air.

Thanks guys, I was with the same thinking that the gamma size wouldn't increase banded with. But the reason I asked was; a gentlmen in the c. cal. area was putting up a 7 element Maco and he was told by a ham op that if he was go with the bigger gamma then it would increase his band width.
I told him that I had never heard of that ever happening, so I will have to ask again if it helped or not........

He was probably thinking that the larger tubing size would increase the bandwidth just like larger element diameters will however I highly doubt it would make any noticeable difference since even changing all the element diameters makes only a small difference at 27 MHz. You gotta watch some of those ham guys. Sometimes they know just enough to be dangerous especially a lot of the newbies and yes even some of the oldies. LOL

Geez, I hope it wasn't me that told you that!

I DID recently take advantage of a local supermarket sale on a Coors 30-pack...
