got the 50 watt slug .
on low it keys 4 swings 10 average on the bird
on high it keys 8 and swings forward to about 13 average .this is while giving a steady aaahhhhh into the mic .
so befor i go tearing into this radio ,how these numbers sound?
this is on 13.8 on my house supply into a dummy load with 50h slug.
opinions,ideas?
someone said do the npc mod to the radio.....you think this would help??the npc mod is basically volting the finals not?

now this is the same radio thats hooked to my dave 2by8 and i get no forward average power from a 400 watt key ....and i should get something forward i would think.
bird peak out the same system is 1800

Personally, I would use a radio that CAN"T swing to 40 watts. Because, even if you set the dead key to 1 or 2 watts, it will still swing to at least 30. Which is too much for that amp - as I recall from an earlier thread.

From what I remember on the specs of that amp, it sounds like it would do best if using a bone-stock Cobra 29 that has a max forward swing of 12-15 watts. The Bird is still confirming no forward power when using the Gen Lee. But does that prove that you are overdriving the amp? Right question!

Have you had anyone operate the radio and you get in a car with another radio and listen o how it sounds on air? Do you have any contacts that can give you a reliable radio check? And if it should sound garbled and over modulated; are you ready to use a radio that has less swing watts output?

Just thinking out loud...

i agree with rob.imho i think the reason ya see no swing with amp on
is cause theres no headroom for it.and from your post it has a driver
in the amp and your overloading it.a better amp for that radio would be
a straight 4 pill 4x2789 like ts500v and similar.or just use a cobra29
with a dk of 2 watts and pep around 10 watts no more.volting finals
in a radio is a bad idea inmho shortens life of radio.

If that Bird is a 43 without the peak reading kit those numbers are right about where they should be.

ok update for you all,
i went ahead and did the ppe mod ,no final volting in this mod .this alone gave me more average power .
in the house on low from 2 watt key i now would see 15 average.
on high with 4 watt key i seen about 18 average pushing it.much better numbers,no volting of finals.
when it went in the vehicle again things are looking much better .i did have to turn it down a hair more .
now after ppe mod on low keying 200 bird i would see 500 bird average swing.
on high i set it to key 400 bird and i seen near 600 bird peak .so i got forward bird watts now .these are non peak watts .
peak watts were still pretty much the same ,i am using a slug doubler on a 1000 watt slug making it read 2k and on peak i swing to 800 so thats right about 1600 bird peak watts.

we getting there?
