What is this?

[Obviously a VODAC TAMC-3986 Automatic Modulation Control, no?]

Little black cube that was wired inline with mic audio wire... Had DC inputs and mic + in/out. Opened it up and it has the circuit board and semiconductors all glued together with that HARD brown epoxy-like goo.

Pulled it out of a radio a few days back... looked factory installed. No luck on Google. Am curious if it is some sort of compressor...

PROBABLY c. 1977-79

Note... radio still had AMC VR and related circuitry on PCB, so it did not appear to replace the standard transistor, diode - resistor thingamabobbies...

Just thought I'd inquire within...

Looks like an equalization circuit may have been put in to custom tailor the audio curve on the mic/modulation.

So - it would be off of the curve that it shows - if another mic is being used - just a guess here...

You can see that the output level (in dB) is flat for input voltage ranging from about 1mV to 100mV.

what else do you need to know about it? other than freq response?

hook it up to your tracking generator and measure the output on the spec an...300Hz to 5kHz sweep please...

{Oh, geez, he's gonna make me work for it again!!! :) }

Will attempt this afternoon late after I get home from my daytime job. Ooh, and my super-penetrator 8000 is supposed to be here via UPS this afternoon, too. I'll attempt to write up a comparison betwixt it and the 1/2 wave vertical dipole that it replaces.

Later today,
Rob
