You could start by reading Work the FM Ham Satellites

Check out his 4 page pdf on working the sats.  If you plan on just working the FM sats, AO-51, A0-27(ascending passes only between 30 and 60N latitude) and SO-50 are the only ones currently active over North America.  SO-67 is active over NA about every 4 weeks and I am unsure of HO-68's status and it has been down for a few months now.

Being able to hear yourself on the downlink of the sat is a big help when starting on the sats, so a duplex capable setup is a good idea. I used an arrow antenna(without duplexer) with 2 HT's for quite a while.  I had headphones connected to the HT I used for receive so I didn't cause any feedback issues.  I now have a duplex capable THD72 with speaker mic and headphones and haven't had much chance to use with the winter weather.

Good Luck on the exam(s)
