Specific equipment recommendations is going to change over time as new products are brought to market.  The equipment is also somewhat of a personal preference.  For example, some people absolutely feel the need to have full duplex functionality so they can hear themselves making it into the satellite.  Others don't seem to care that much about that feature.


The decision on whether to do this with an HT or a radio like the Yaesu FT-817ND depends greatly on whether or not you plan on working anything other than the FM satellites.  The other thing to consider is what other aspects of ham radio you would like to venture into.  An HT is good for carrying around and hitting local repeaters with, but the 817 gets you on HF.


Of course, the nice thing is that this is not all mutually exclusive.  You can start out doing this with an HT and then change your mind later if you decide you want to try out the SSB birds and HF activities.
