Well I was running out of time and thought I may not get in my usual good deed for the year until the other day. I got a phone call on the weekend from my former boss from back in the broadcast business days. Dave had mistakenly heard the plant where I work was shutting down for good. As it happens it was the sister plant across the street from us. We are actually looking at expanding. Anyway Dave is pushing 80 and is in poor health with COPD and in our conversation he mentioned that he was QRT due to big problems with his HF radio a Kenwood TS-520 hybrid. He has not been able to get on the 80m nets he so greatly enjoys. Today I dropped off a very nice TS-520 with DG-5 digital readout and D-104 Silver Eagle microphone for him to use until "whenever" as I said. I bought the radio back in the summer from a ham in Quebec and never set it up. My main rig is a Yaesu FT-857 with a classic Kenwood TS-820S as back up..........or is it the other way around. I offered the second VFO but he declined as he never works split. I picked this 520 stuff up because I got a good deal and it was in very good shape and I eventually want one each 820S, 520, and an 830 so now I just need an 830 and some more accessories to go with them. I have some for the 820S. Dave was overjoyed at being able to get back on the air without it costing him a dime. He has been hit hard lately with costs associated with his illness. Normally around this time of year I adopt a grinch attitude but this year the timing was different and I was getting hard pressed to do my annual ONE good deed for the year so I said WTF. Even the grinch had a change of heart. If you should ever hear VE1UJ especially on 80m around 3735 or 3760 give him a shout and tell him how my radio sounds.
