I'm running a 5/8 wave Alumn..I was wondering if the sheet metal roof could act as a groundplane.I live on the second floor. The antenna is between 8 and 9 feet off the roof. The base of the antenna is 27 feet off the ground. It has no groundplane kit on it.

I see none of you guys can come up with the answer. All you wanted to know is what kind of antenna I have.It seem a lot of guys come out here and reply to a post just to hear themselves talk.So I made a few calls to a couple Hamm operators and got my answer.Enjoy your CB radios.

If you wanted to know the kind of antenna you have; why didn't you post a picture of it?
Some of these guys here can be pretty sharp; but they can't read your mind.

Will a metal roof affect propagation of an antenna? Sure; you knew that before you posed the question. It's going to look like a ground or counterpoise to any antenna. Sooooo.....having a ground surface so close to the antenna is going to affect its propagation and possibly its tune. Doesn't matter if it is 5/8 wave or a 1/4.

i have a hard time hearing my post on a forum ..... but i do like reading my post on them .
does that count ?

my question would be IF the antenna doesn't have an adjustable tapping point for the tuning system would making such a drastic change in the length of the ground elements still allow the antenna to tune good enough for 11 meters ? most base CB antennas seem to only be adjustable/tunable by changing the length of the vertical element . if your antenna is like the sirio 27 the ground elements are only a little over 4 ft long and theres only 3 of them .

CB 27 MHz Base Antenna, GPE 27 5/8, GPS 27 1/2

YouTube - Sirio GPE2 27 5/8 CB 27 Mhz Antenna at 1400m above sea level

youll need several feet of wire/mast to connect to the roof which also becomes part of the ground plane which will affect the tuning of the antenna . if your antenna has user adjustable tuning point for its tuning system it should be an issue tuning wise , if not just adjusting the length of the vertical may not be enough .

and of course as robb said where its mounted on your roof and the pitch of the roof will affect tx and rx also .

can it work .... yes
will it work .... maybe
