I was wondering, after reading about the FT101ES special (et al specials) that this a special Japanese version with a single tube for 50W output, rather than the regular 100+W version.

So was there something about a 50W power limit in Japan or why would there be a special version?

There was or still is a license class,Third Class Amateur Radio Operator, that was limited to 50 watts on all HF bands except no operation was allowed on 20m.It may have been a cheaper introductory radio targeting that ticket class holder.I wonder if it included TX ability on 20m?

In the US, Novices and Tech+ are limited to 200W PEP SSB on 10 meters.

Novices are limited to 25W on 1.25M and 5W PEP on 23cm.
