Hidden magnet for discretely mounting mic

I was wondering if there would be any adverse effects of 'gluing' a mini magnet to the back side of a microphone (the part that normally slides into the mic holder). I have a 'relatively' collectible car that I would like to avoid putting holes into for the mic holder. My idea is to glue a larger magnet to the underside of the center console area (which is about 1/8" thick plastic), and glue a mini magnet to the back of the mic. Then the idea would be to simply sit the mic over the area of the console that has the magnet underneath, and voila - a holder.

Thoughts? - I think it'll work with respect to holding, just not sure if it will adversely effect signal.

I doubt if it would have any adverse effects at all, do it. I use velcro, about for the same reason, and can usually get the 'goop' off later with 'whatever that stuff' is called.

Not likely.
If it does then just remove it.

It the magnet is strongf and the mic element is a dynamic type it could affect the response of the mic. A dynamic mic element is similar to a speaker and relies on the movement of a voice coil inside a permanent magnet. Any other magnetic field close to it may affect it. If the mic is a condenser type it will be unaffected. Simply test it by speaking into the mic while holding the magnet near where you want to mount it.

My K40 mic has a magnet in the back. I still have the mic hanger for it. It's a mount made of metal and cupped to keep the mic from sliding

Great! Thanks for the feedback. I found a magnet that is almost the exact size of the screw in 'hook?' on the back of the mic. Now just need to drill thru, and screw this one in it's place. Still working on the bottom magnet for underneath the console. Think I'm just going to magnetize a strip of metal, then epoxy it.

So I figured I'd update this in case anyone else wanted to follow in my footsteps on this experiment. In short, for my application, it was pretty much a failure. The problem is that this setup is going into an SUV outfitted for 'expedition use'. What I was finding was that the power of the magnet underneath the console needed to be quite strong to keep the mic in place. I then ordered two stronger magnets (one for the dash, one for the console) in hopes of having a 'close by' and an 'out of the way' option.

The main problem is that the strength of the magnet required to hold the mic in place is pretty substantial... i.e.. freakishly strong, and even then it still won't do a great job of keeping the mic from bouncing around offroad. Additionally, once I managed to hold these magnets in person, you realize they are borderline dangerous (the two I ordered were stuck to each other separated by a 1/4" piece of plastic. I was unable to pull them apart - I had to slide them apart and quickly put a towel around one of them to keep the other from jumping back over to it).

Once I realized how strong the magnets were, I started reading about how they shouldn't be used around electronics, computers, people with pacemakers... serious about the pacemakers. Figured not a good idea to have something in the truck that'll mess with compasses, ipads used for navigation, and the radio itself that I'm trying to 'help out'. Plus, did I mention it didn't really hold that well?

So it's velcro for me!

Mic holder

Hello check around I found a no holes mic holder
at a cb truck stop it has double sided tape and
its plastic. You can also use a small piece of Velcro
remove the holder knob put the Velcro on it.
I have a 1 1/2" on top my dash for the stock
FT-857D mic.

I was going to say use one of those 'neo-bubblegum' magnets but it sounds like you are to start with. (Gotta watch them things, blood-blisters are sort of common with them.) I was also going to suggest velcro but it's been suggested too. You may have to break down and just use a spring tensioned mic-holder?

I am firm believer in drilling holes and in my vintage vw diesel was worth it for a good solid place to quickly clip and unclip the mic. It will be included if I ever do sell it. The car is not decripid but not show grade either. If u absolutely can't alter it I think stick on Velcro or side of radio be about the only option

I gave up trying different ways to mount a standard mic hanger without drilling and got a little inventive. The cure was a standard wall picture hanger hook. I merely bent the back part straight and stuck in behind the dash trim around the front console. The molding holds in very securely.
