My Jackson puts out a very HI tone on SSB thru the radio speaker. Is there any way I can tone down the HI's from the speaker like the 148GTL does? i.e. HI/LO tone.

Aloha, Jim....

Hi Mini, There probably is, don't know what the parts would be to add to a radio but you can always get an Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu external speaker with selectable filters on front. I got an older Kenwood SP820 at a hamfest for $30.

Good luck!

Here's a quick mod you can do to "tone down" the audio thru your speaker.

Take a 22 or a 47 microfarad (22uf or 47uf) electrolytic capacitor, and solder it across the speaker terminals. Observe polarity, and you may have to desolder one of the wires off the speaker to check the polarity of the speaker wires (both wires are the same color, so you have to check which wire is + to the speaker, and which one is - to the speaker, sometimes they aren't soldered to the speaker in the correct polarity). Positive on the capacitor goes to + on the speaker terminal, and so on. That should lower the audio tone a bit. If 47uf is not enough, try a 100uf. The higher the capacitance, the lower the tone.

Cheers!

to make a simple hi/lo tone switch for your radio, get a SPDT two position toggle switch and a ceramic disc capacitor between .001 and .1uF in value.
(.001 will have the least effect in lowering the tone, and .1 will have a dramatic effect. choose whatever value in that range that sounds good to you)

looking at the back of the switch held sideways, you see three terminals.
(*-*-*)
left, middle and right.

solder the disc cap to the middle and right terminals.
solder a wire to the right terminal, and solder a wire to the left terminal.

look at the volume potentiometer in your radio.
you will see three terminals with wires on at least two of them.

you are going to be soldering the two wires from your switch to the outer terminals of the volume pot. one wire to each terminal.

you can experiment with the effect of different value caps by temporarily soldering the caps right to the outer terminals of the volume pot.
once you find the value you like, solder it to the switch and then you can have hi or lo tone.

as for the electrolytics on the speaker terminals, i have seen that mod before but it used two electrolytics connected together, pos to neg and neg to pos, then soldered to the speaker terminals effectively making it a non polarized electrolytic

hope this helps,
LC

Hey Robb, all 3 Pres. I had have a HI pitched audio on SSB. OK I installed a 47uh cap between the + & - leads on the speaker. It toned it down a bit to suite my taste. Thanx Guys. Aloha, JIm.....
