HMMM....Almost no receive

Hey,

My Cobra 148 GTL has a quirk. SOMETIMES there is no receive on AM. I can hit 27.555 on USB and talk all over, and hear pretty well, but its dead quiet an AM. I can tell when PPL talk cause the meter moves, and I hear loud static that goes in and out when the meter moves.

Um, this isn't a 20-plus year old one made in Taiwan, is it?

That's a pretty rare symptom to report in the first place.

Sure sounds like an open winding in one of the tunable IF transformers, probably one of the 3 AM-only cans. Those are the ones with the wide screwdriver-size slot in the top.

Those don't fail often, but if the radio is really old, it's marginally more likely.

Hasn't had any liquids spilled into it, has it? They can 'wick' into the interior of the small IF-transformer cans and corrode the frog-hair wires inside.

Just not a symptom that comes up a lot.

Well it's 16 years old... it's a 89 phil.
I had it tuned by a reputable shop, but I didn't tell them it was doing that cause I thought they'd find it and fix it. when I got it back last week it still did it, but now its all the time instead of once and a while.
