Re: How do I go about diagnosing my vehicle STALLing when...

I'm curious if the RF is getting into the computer also. If so, it's probably coming in throught the power lines feeding the computer. Another interesting thing is that you said the wipers would come on. Are the wipers controlled by a lever on the steering column? If so, the wiper control module is probably right around the steering column also, where you ran the power line. My guess (and it's purely a guess) is that you've got common mode interference on the radio's power line. The length of the run of the power cord is probably just the perfect length to make for an efficient antenna. If you want to test this out, see if you can get a small car battery or power supply to sit next to the radio temporarily. Eisconnect the power from the truck, and attach it with a real short lead to the power supply or car batttery, key the radio and see what happens. If it still kills the truck, then it's definately RFI from the radio, coax, or antenna, and you're going to have to start shielding things (or start looking at the radio). If it doesn't kill it, then you've got either a common mode current problem, or something mechanical. BTW, what kind of tune-up was done to the radio?

...I key the mic? Here's the scoop:

**1990 Dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 automatic with no pwr windows. all original except 3"lift kit

**Running an RCI2950 1st generation I beleive.

**I use to run with it a BOOMER 250deluxe but not inline at the moment. Totally disconnected.

**Have TWO Nugratrons({"Nugget"}Oklahoma) inline 18" apart on 1-1/2"X19"X1/2" piece of alum bar stock on a ballmount, mounted to roof. Thought I had a pic of them on here, but I see that I do not. I will submit one tho!

**all grounds in place except from back of radio to chasis!?hmmm???

***symtoms*** RIght now I am only useing ONE antenna directly off the ball mount. When I have everything setup, and I key the mic while engine is running, my truck WILL die! Plain and simple DEAD! If I am running down the road/highway etc, and key the mic, it will putter putter..

**My SWR is just about 1.3 as high as 2.1

Some have advised me to SHEILD my computer, some have told me to dble sheild my power leads from radio to battery.

** I have a straight connection from radio to battery passing from radio over sterringcolumn, through the drivers door under upper hinge, through inner and outer skin of drvrs frnt fender to the battery!

NOw lets go back to when I first set this all up! In the beginning, my wipers would come on when I would key the mic, but the truck didn't stall. Then the stalling started to occure and the automatic wipers quit. WHat I did from then on was this:

*I pulled out the boomer-no help

*went from two inline ants to asingle off the ball mount- no help

*re routed my lead-no help. Put those back as stated above

My brain box is on one side and the battery is on oppisite. There are some relays on the battery side that the leads pass behind of, but........

My thoughts are that one or more is a culpret!:

bad brain box/computer or alternator and battery need upgraded and perhaps even seperated (but I had my chrg system chkd about a month and all is ok, holding a good charge and alt is chrgn good. Mech said maybe a NEW battery near mid winter...

Or perhaps the RADIO itself has a serious internal short that doesnt have an effect on input/output till the engine has been started.

ANY TAKERS?????

I will try to get a pic in here after this post up!

Thanks HappyHolidays and 73
