A J-Pole is simply an end fed stub matched HALF WAVE radiator. Nothing mystical nor magical about it. Performance is on par with any other radial-less halfwave vertical. The angle of radiation could be lower if radials were used but that applies to any vertical whether it "needs" radials or not.
