Very interesting information here, I would tend to agree. Although my testing methods are not as in depth as yours, I have found on the simple hfe test the numbers of the 2sc2999 to be at or below the results of the part being replaced.

I have a few of these left here although I am not sure of the "e" denotation it has been awhile since I have seen them. They were manufactured by Sanyo.
